A total of 694 streams were sampled for benthic macroinvertebrates in the autumn of 1995 as part of the Swedish national stream survey. After removal of sites considered as impacted, data from 428 streams as well as a large number of environmental variables were used to determine the relative importance of local, landscape, and large scale factors in explaining the variability in species composition of benthic stream macroinvertebrates. The environmental variables were divided into seven explanatory variable groups: local physical, local chemical, catchment land use/cover, catchment bedrock geology, Quaternary geology in catchment, regional factors (such as ecoregion) and spatial position. Partial Canonical Correspondence Analysis was used to partition the total explained variance in the species data into these variable groups. The pure (or unique) effects of the seven variable groups accounted for 69.1%, and combinations of variable groups (interaction terms) the remaining 30.9% of the total explained variability. Local scale variables such as in-stream substratum, vegetation in and near the stream (riparian zone), and some chemical variables were most strongly associated with the among-site variability. Local physical (24.4%) and local chemical (20.4%) variables explained the largest part of the among-site variability of community assemblages. These results are of importance when planning conservation and management measurements, implementing large-scale biomonitoring programs, and predicting how human alterations will affect running water ecosystems.This revised version was published online in May 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Farming of yellowtail kingfish ( Seriola lalandi , Valenciennes, 1833) in the coastal waters of Australia is a relatively new aquaculture industry, and little is known about the magnitude of nutrient discharges from individual pens. In this work, we modelled the flow of nitrogen for each of two commercial pens in Fitzgerald Bay, upper Spencer Gulf, South Australia. The fish were fed commercial pellets with feed conversion ratios (FCRs) between 3.0 and 3.2 (dry weight feed/wet weight growth). These high values of FCR were reflected in the high nitrogen loads to the environment (176–195 kg N tonne−1 growth) and a small retention of nitrogen in fish growth (14–16% of feed inputs). Considering an annual production of 2000 tonnes, total loads to the environment can reach 391 tonnes N year−1. Eighty-two per cent of these loads are expected to be lost to the water column as dissolved wastes. The high nutrient loads and the importance of dissolved wastes compared with other aquaculture species, such as salmon and trout, reflect the distinctly higher metabolic rates of this pelagic predatory species. The nature of the wastes suggests low localized impacts at current production levels, but regional effects remain unknown.  相似文献

A Tasmanian tidalflat receiving differing amounts of vehicle traffic associated with the servicing of oyster farm leases was sampled for sediment properties and benthic community structure. There was a gradient of vehicle usage in both the littoral zone (LZ) and the intertidal zone (IZ), with the highest usage in the intertidal zone equating to the lowest usage in the littoral zone (IZ2=LZ1). Results indicate that the littoral sediments were less compacted where vehicles were present. Species richness and diversity were reduced in the littoral sites (70%) and one intertidal site (50%) where there was vehicle traffic. Multivariate analyses confirmed the univariate findings. Large bivalves and epibenthic snails were generally less abundant where there was vehicle traffic. However, in the intertidal zone one snail showed the opposite pattern. There was less change in the community structure at sites where vehicles spread out across the foreshore than at sites where all vehicles travelled in a narrow lane, but this reduction in impact was offset by a greater area being affected. This study provides preliminary evidence of a measurable impact on sediment and community composition at 16 vehicle trips per day and suggests that management needs to consider the tradeoff between magnitude of impact and area affected.  相似文献

  1. Today, aquatic biodiversity suffers from many pressures linked to human activities, including climate change, which particularly affects alpine areas. Many alpine freshwater species have shifted their geographical distribution to colder areas, but a reduced availability of suitable habitats is also forecasted. New artificial water bodies could provide habitat enhancement opportunities, including small mountain reservoirs built to overcome a lack of snow during winter.
  2. To investigate the role of reservoirs as a habitat for freshwater invertebrates, a case study was conducted on eight reservoirs in the Swiss Alps. The study aimed to compare the water quality and freshwater biodiversity of the reservoirs with those of 39 natural and newly excavated ponds. Data were collected on physico‐chemistry, freshwater habitat structure, and aquatic insects (dragonflies and aquatic beetles).
  3. The study showed that the mountain reservoirs investigated did not differ from natural ponds in terms of surface area, conductivity, and trophic level. Similarly to natural ponds, reservoirs showed signs of impairment owing to surface run‐off carrying pollutants linked to ski tourism. They presented a low diversity of mesohabitats, and in particular lacked vegetation. Compared with natural ponds, the species richness in reservoirs was lower for dragonflies but not for beetles. At the regional scale, the community from the reservoirs was a subset of the natural ponds community, supporting 38% of the regional species richness for these two insect groups.
  4. The results suggest that mountain reservoirs are likely to be important for biodiversity in alpine areas, both as habitats and as stepping stones for species shifting their geographical range. These water bodies can be enhanced further by some nature‐friendly measures to maximize benefits for biodiversity, including margin revegetation or the creation of adjacent ponds. Ecological engineering needs to be innovative and promote freshwater biodiversity in artificial reservoirs.

  • 1. Habitat heterogeneity has many implications in ecological assessment studies. On one hand it provides varying niches for organisms, increasing diversity. On the other hand, the inherent spatial variability of structurally complex systems may overlap with ecological condition making it difficult to disentangle the effects of perturbation. This study investigated the combined and single effects of habitat and pond condition on the macroinvertebrate assemblages of 35 ponds located in north‐west Spain and spanning a range of water quality and habitat characteristics.
  • 2. Macroinvertebrate communities and several environmental variables were sampled in the summer of 2004 or 2003. Samples were collected from four dominant habitats (vegetated shores, shores without vegetation, submerged vegetation, bare sediments) following a time‐limited sampling. Non‐metric multidimensional scaling and two‐way crossed ANOSIM were used to investigate the taxonomic and functional differences in macroinvertebrate assemblage structure among habitats (four types) and pond conditions (optimal, good, moderate, poor, very poor). To investigate the individual and combined effects of pond condition and habitat on several diversity measures GLM models were used. In addition, the accuracy of two sampling designs — stratified and multihabitat — was compared using the CVs of seven macroinvertebrate attributes.
  • 3. Results showed that macroinvertebrate communities differed significantly, albeit weakly, among habitat types and pond condition categories. In particular, the abundance of several Chironomidae genera, rarefied richness and Shannon index decreased both in perturbed systems and bare sediments, whereas no marked differences occurred between shores and submerged vegetation.
  • 4. We suggest that a multihabitat approach together with the use of community attributes not (or slightly) affected by habitat type will provide more comparable results across ponds than a stratified approach or observation of the whole community, especially in ponds where degradation leads to habitat loss.Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract – Structural complexity offered by submerged macrophytes was shown to have fundamental effects on interactions between fish and their prey. However, less information is available for littoral reed (Phragmites spp.) stands. A previous field study found juvenile roach and perch to coexist within the reed stands. It was suggested that reed serves mainly as refuge against littoral piscivores, such that coexistence of perch and roach in the reed was externally forced. Several hypotheses were raised to explain why roach nevertheless showed good growth performance. Three of the hypotheses were tested experimentally. In particular, we were interested in how the confinement of fish to one of the reed or open water habitats alters feeding and growth patterns of juvenile age‐1 perch and roach. Fish were stocked separately into littoral enclosures for a 3‐week period in densities which had been found in the surrounding lake. Development of zooplankton and macroinvertebrate biomasses was observed by sampling the enclosures three times over the experimental period. Individual consumption of prey groups by the fish was calculated with a bioenergetics model, and was compared with prey group biomass in the enclosure treatments. The confinement of fish to one littoral habitat had clear effects on diet composition and growth rates. Roach fed less zooplankton and partially switched to macroinvertebrates in the reed enclosures when compared with the open water treatments, and consequently their growth rates were lower in the reed. Perch preferred macroinvertebrates in both habitats, without any difference in growth rates between the habitats. Effects of fish predation on both zooplankton and macroinvertebrate biomass were low in open water and reed enclosures. Daily consumption rates were only in a few cases higher than 40% of the available biomass of the respective prey group, but mainly were below 10% of available biomass. Therefore, we argue that both the diel horizontal migrations of roach and the relatively low consumption rate of fish when compared with the available resource biomass allow the coexistence of juvenile roach and perch in littoral reed stands.  相似文献

  • 1. Mass balanced trophic models and dynamic simulations of two benthic ecological systems from La Rinconada Marine Reserve (Antofagasta Bay, SE Pacific) were constructed.
  • 2. The scallop Argopecten purpuratus is the most important benthic resource in La Rinconada Marine Reserve, followed by the carnivorous snail Thais chocolata, and the filter‐feeder bivalves Tagelus dombeii and Transennella pannosa.
  • 3. Information on biomass, P/B ratios, catches, food spectrum, consumption, and dynamics of commercial and non‐commercial species was obtained and examined using Ecopath with an Ecosim software package.
  • 4. The bivalves A. purpuratus and T. dombeii represented the most abundant compartments in the studied subsystems. Of the carnivores, the snail T. chocolata was dominant, followed by the crabs Cancer spp. and the functional group of large epifauna.
  • 5. The two subsystems presented similar values of system throughput. The mean trophic level of their fisheries also reached similar magnitudes (2.0), showing that the harvests in each system concentrated on secondary producers. Likewise, both subsystems presented similar A/C ratios (29.9 and 30.3), suggesting that they were immature.
  • 6. The results obtained using mixed trophic impact (MTI) and Ecosim (increasing the fishing mortality Fi by four times) showed that only four species propagated the highest direct and indirect effects. Coincidentally, these species are the most economically important and the changes produced by the scallop A. purpuratus are noteworthy.
  • 7. With regard to the system recovery time (SRT) estimates, only three species or functional groups presented the highest magnitudes, from highest to lowest: the sea star Luidia magallanica, the scallop A. purpuratus, and the crabs Cancer spp.
  • 8. The topological keystone indexes of Jordán and Libralato had divergent results. According to Jordán's index, the keystone species were L. magallanica, Cancer spp., and detritus; whereas Libralato's index showed phytoplankton to be the keystone species.
  • 9. Based on the results obtained, it is concluded that trophic mass balanced models and simulated management scenarios have considerable value for planning interventions and manipulations or for planning more sustainable management strategies in La Rinconada Marine Reserve.   1. In many biomes, a variety of different small freshwater habitats, such as pools and phytotelmata can occur together in the same habitat matrix. However, both the biodiversity and the functioning of these ecosystems remain poorly known.
  2. Three freshwater habitat types in a tropical West African biodiversity hotspot were studied.
  3. The study demonstrated that animal communities in water-filled tree holes, temporary ponds and granite rock pools were strongly differentiated with exclusive faunas despite their spatial proximity and similar disturbance in the form of seasonal drought.
  4. In particular, granite rock pools stood out with a high gamma diversity. Rock pools were also functionally different from the other two habitat types. The three habitats had contrasting predator assemblages, a differential reliance on primary production and different concentrations of available nutrients.
  5. The work illustrates that the biodiversity and functions of small temporary freshwater habitats can be strongly differentiated. This shows the unique and potentially complementary roles that these habitats can fulfil in mediating fluxes of energy and nutrients and preserving aquatic biodiversity in landscapes.
  6. Temporary aquatic habitats are typically overlooked in conservation policy and local management plans despite being threatened by habitat transformation. In addition, livestock can threaten savanna ponds, wood exploitation can threaten tree holes, and mining and sediment disruption can threaten rock pools. Hence, better knowledge about the ecological functioning of these ecosystems is vital to the implementation of effective conservation strategies.

浙江沿岸休闲生态型人工鱼礁初选点的环境适宜性分析   总被引:3,自引:1,他引:3  
根据对浙江沿岸拟投放休闲生态型人工鱼礁的17个测站34个航次的环境本底调查结果,从水质、底质、生物环境等方面分析了投礁的可行性,并对浙江沿岸北部的绿华、朱家尖,中部的渔山、大陈和南部的虎头屿5个已经开始投礁的试放点的环境适宜性进行了论证,用水质、底质、生物三大类14个指标进行了分析评估和排序。结果表明,浙江沿岸除局部海域水色较浑、水流较急、易发赤潮外,大部分水质、底质和生物指标适合投放人工鱼礁。经分析评估和排序后,5个试放点的环境适宜性排序依次为渔山、虎头屿、绿华、朱家尖和大陈。  相似文献
